Last Friday I attended the Black Birth Worker Brunch for Black Maternal Health Week which is from April 11th-17th.

Black Maternal Health Week is to help raise awareness of the state of Black Maternal Health in the US. Because the US has the highest maternal death rate among developed nations and disproportionately high rates which are 2.5-3 times higher for Black and American Indian, and Alaska Native women compared to non-Hispanic whites.

The Black Birth Worker Brunch + Retreat was hosted by the Oshun Family Center and The Maternal Wellness Village whose mission is to function as an action-oriented task force by providing support services to empower communities throughout the African Diaspora.

Through their efforts, this group of birth workers’ aim is to increase modern adaptations of ancestral birth practices, reclaim the black birth experience and reduce black maternal mortality.
